I have been reading about this. I think it is a great idea. Worth spreading the word!

Looks like an interesting proposal... everything is virtual and you just get $10 from your pocket. But hopefully the White House will use the space for actually planting stuff to eat.

I don't see how it will help encourage the white house to start a kitchen garden, to me it seems like it would just line the pockets of the kitchen gardeners international.

I think that this is an interesting idea. They have all that space that could be used for good purposes.

I think that it could expand awareness of organic and kitchen gardens, and I don't see anything wrong with that; the ten dollars I'll keep. I read that during World War One there were sheep grazing on the White House lawn; Why not organic veggies during another time of crisis?

Maybe the whole economical crisis will motivate Mr. Bush to actually do something about planting something in his garden... I can imagine the tax payers will pay for that too!

I would have to say that with the current economic crisis like the poster stated above future President's just might not have a choice in the matter.

It would do some of them good to find out how much work is involved in making your own living, and putting food on the table. In the US it seems that those in power are always those who are rich and privileged, and have no idea what the ordinary Joe in the street has to go through to get his daily bread

Even if white house agrees to have a kitchen garden, I dont think stav that any president would actually sit their and toil in the farm. For press photographs definitely yes, but not for real....

I've been thinking about this, and perhaps the cachet of having something grown on the White House property might bring some profit. Growing something with a high yield, such as rosemary, or some other spice, might be the way to go. President Obama (please God!)could pose for the label, and he could put the profits toward the national debt.

Stav, that's so funny, but would he be able to make a success of gardening? I guess everyone eventually finds one thing that they are good at.

well he hasn't found his yet... so you never know.. and he is a farm boy/rancher type at heart don't forget..

I think that this will gain publicity, and it would probably raise awareness, but I fail to see any long-lasting benefit from it.

If it encourages people to grow more and to think about what they eat then perhaps it could have a lasting benefit

I agree with atula... seems like it will be taken as a photo opportunity more than the real purpose of having a kitchen garden... but who knows? Change seems to come right around the corner.

Well yes it would be mostly a photo op.. but there is no such thing as bad publicity don't forget.

I think it would be a good example if the president decided to do a kitchen garden on the lawns, it would be the perfect example.

It will be interesting to see the Obamas planting some veggies in the garden, specially having girls that would have it as a fun thing to do.
